They shift at 8.5 miles automatically into second gear, and back if you go slower than 8.5 miles per hour. I am a stick shift kind of guy, but this works so smooth and keeps the lines of the bike so clean, I love this bike.....(Now I really need to sell one or two of my older bikes) Tern Link P9 Nice Vid from Nyce. The talented testrider got a little over-enthusiastic about how fast you can fold a Tern. 3 Minutes into the Vid he should have taken the extra time to slide open the safety pin, otherwise you will be able to break it.
